Message from Howard Nelson

Hello

I wanted to write and introduce myself as the new County Lead Volunteer (County Commissioner) for Lincolnshire Scouts. I feel very privileged and honoured to have been appointed and am very much looking forward to working with and supporting you.

For those of you who do not know me, I have been involved in Scouting as an adult with roles in the Scout and Explorer sections, county roles in Lincolnshire as DCC Activities and using my skills on the water within Scouting and beyond with RYA. More recently, I have been a Deputy Commissioner in British Scouting Overseas, looking after programme, activities, and training adults. I live in the Stamford and Bourne District and was the District Chair until recently. I have many happy memories of being a member of with 24th Lincoln (Saxilby), starting as a Cub and completed my Queen’s Scout Award a Maverick Venture Scout.

My plan for the next couple of months will be to learn more about the county and understand how we can better support scouting across Lincolnshire. I will be out and about to give people an opportunity to chat and meet me. I will also be working with our Comms Team to launch a county bulletin (issued on the first Friday of each month) and a newsletter, so we can keep you better informed. Our priorities for the Autumn will be about Transformation, Safety Management and how we improve support for grassroots scouting. I will share details of these as time progresses.

I am looking for support with a few different areas and would be delighted to hear from you if feel you might be able to help by joining one of our teams:

• Programme – working with districts and groups across Lincolnshire supporting the delivery of safe, engaging, suitable programmes for young people.

• Learning - ensuring compliance with learning modules and building a community of volunteers who can support and deliver training across the county, ensuring provision and completion of all learning for all adults.

• Communications - building a campaign of internal communications for Lincolnshire to ensure consistent, engaging communications, as well as ensuring communications from UK HQ are shared across suitable platforms.

• Volunteer Experience – supporting transformation across Lincolnshire and engaging the adult volunteers there with the volunteer experience changes.

I want to make sure anyone who volunteers feels supported, empowered, and that everyone enjoys their time volunteering. If you’re still reading, I would love to hear from you!

Finally, I would also like to place on record my huge thanks to Amy for all the hard work in supporting the delivery of quality scouting in the county and the enthusiasm she has shown in the role to take Lincolnshire to where it is now.

If you have any questions or good ideas, my email is Howard.Nelson@Lincolnshirescouts.org.uk
