September Bulletin

By Howard Nelson September 5, 2025
Welcome Back! I hope that you have all enjoyed a restful summer and are now looking forward to the start of a new term. Although autumn brings shorter days and darker evenings, it also provides many opportunities to engage in new and rewarding activities with your sections. From Squirrels through to Network, the enthusiasm of our young people is evident – whether they are embracing new challenges, working towards badges, or simply enjoying time together within their section. Thanks to the dedication and creativity of leaders across the County, our members are consistently offered opportunities to develop confidence, teamwork, and resilience. As we enter the autumn term, there is much to anticipate. With County events, training opportunities, and group activities ahead, this is the season when Scouting truly comes into its own – providing structure, fun, and adventure at the heart of our young people’s experiences. We continue to volunteer in an increasingly demanding environment, where time is often stretched. I would like to extend my sincere thanks for everything you do to ensure young people gain valuable Skills for Life. At the same time, it is vital to remember the importance of training in keeping our young people safe. If you are asked to complete training or a DBS check, please do so as promptly as possible—or reach out if you encounter difficulties. None of us became involved in Scouting to spend our time chasing others about compliance, and it is worth remembering that those who are reminding you are themselves being reminded by others. A little courtesy and cooperation makes a great difference. Finally, I would like to express my deep thanks to all our volunteers. Your commitment ensures that every meeting, trip, and activity contributes to brilliant and life-shaping experiences for our members. Here’s to a successful and inspiring new term of Scouting! Hykeham Scouts rescue a ‘vessel in distress’ in the North Sea While out on the water on a recent trip in the North Sea with Adventures Offshore, the young people and leaders of the North Hykeham based 15th Lincoln Scout group received a ‘PAN PAN’ radio call and a request for the Dover Coast Guard. "Pan Pan" is an internationally recognised radio call used to signal an urgent situation that is not a life-threatening emergency but still requires attention as soon as possible. The group took decisive action and immediately went to assist, recovering the vessel which is believed to have run out of fuel. By leading this rescue the scouts have been able ensure the safety of all without the need of a lifeboat being launched, giving emergency services better capability to respond to other potential emergency situations. Well done Hykeham Scouts!

Every year every youth member is required to pay a membership fee, this membership fee is made up of 3 elements. The fee is made up of 3 parts The National Fee The County Levy A district Levy (if there is one) The National Fee for 2026/27 will be £44, £43.50 if paid to HQ before 23rd April. https://www.scouts.org.uk/news/2025/august/membership-fee-for-2026-27/ The county has a Trustee meeting every November in which it decides how much the county levy will be. This county levy includes payment of OSM for every group and section, paid administrative support to operate the county, free first response and leader training, support and further development of our activity units. As soon as we have decided the levy for next year we will notify District Lead Volunteers and District Treasurers. Each district can then apply a levy, this will depend on the number of activities the district provides for free and if it has any assets. Your district will notify you of the levy that each youth member has to pay. The county and all districts are mindful of the ever increasing costs and if you are opening a new section please consult your District Volunteer to ensure that you do not find yourself with a bill you can’t afford. If you are concerned about anything financial please ask.
