UK Chief Scout Bear Grylls flew into a weekend water activities training camp based at Hykeham Water Activities Centre, Lincoln. The flying visit was part of a Bear in the Air tour of the East Midlands.
Following his arrival by helicopter Bear took to the water in a powerboat along with East Midlands Regional Commissioner Sue Harris and made his way around the water chatting with over 80 Scouts and volunteers taking part in a variety of water activities including dinghy sailing, kayaking and powerboating.
The aim of the event was to help develop skills to allow more adventurous activities to take place in the county by increasing the number of Scouts and volunteers achieving National Governing Body qualifications. It also formed part of the Royal Yachting Association’s national Push the Boat Out initiative, encouraging more people onto the water.
The new skills learnt over the weekend will allow more Scouts to take to the water in the future whilst also providing further opportunities for personal development through instructor qualifications and competitions such as the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship.
