Cubs from 7th Grantham enjoy volunteering at Newton House Nursing Home

The Cubs have done three visits so far which has seen them play games and talk with the residents as well as perform Christmas carols. The volunteering was part of the Million Hands initiative that aims to get half a million young people committed to removing social barriers, connecting communities and improving lives.

The Cubs chose dementia awareness as the social issue that they wanted to focus on and they have also been involved in talks about dementia to raise awareness of the condition.

Sue Newbatt, Group Scout Leader, said:

“The group will be carrying on their link with the nursing home and we are looking at other ways in which we can get involved with them. One idea being discussed is a teddy bears picnic.

“One of the highlights so far was when the Cubs - who are reaching the end of their centenary year, highlighting one hundred years of Cub Scouting - met one of the nursing home residents who also turned 100 this year.”
