Easter Camp at Home

I hope you all managed to get a visit from a hoppy companion last weekend and a moment to reflect on the signs of spring around us, the buds of new beginnings, rebirth of hope and opportunity amidst the complexity of the world around us right now.

In terms of Scouting; Well, we may well have planned to be camping in some shared spaces on this glorious spring weekend but even with the separation imposed on us so many of you have found brilliant ways to be together. See how many of our campers you recognise in the Easter Camp Gallery.

At our house we enjoyed the spring sunshine and our connection to our own little bit of nature as well as joining many others in the #campathome Facebook event https://www.facebook.com/events/539494096964579/. We’ve enjoyed cooking and eating our tea outdoors, joining 1st Gainsborough for a campfire via Zoom and slept in our indoor tents (garden pitch unavailable) and cooked up pancakes for breakfast.

We’re not the only ones either, around the County there have been many of you indoors, outdoors, in tents, dens and forts, even just out under the stars …
  • 1st Gainsborough encouraged Cubs and Beavers to camp out in their gardens or have a 'sleepover' at home (bringing the tent inside/building a blanket fort to sleep in or whatever else they can come up with, as long as they didn't sleep where they usually do.
  • 1st Woodhall Spa remastered their planned Easter Camp to offer online challenges to include making bird feeders, camp gadgets, alphabet scavenger hunt, easter egg hunt and sharing camp set up and holding tent inspection via Facebook photos.
  • 1st Willingham linked their group and shared their camp activities and locations via Facebook as well as doing a live scout quiz.
  • In Wittering, Cub Jake and Scout Ellie practised putting up the big family tent and enjoyed an indoor camp.
  • The Boston Commissioners’ garden site soon filled up and other district gardens were well attended as part of the DC Challenge to spend a night in a tent.
  • The Hartley family had a BBQ, played in the paddling pool, stuffed bananas with chocolate to cook in the embers, enjoyed stargazing before a good nights sleep and a hearty breakfast with some very promising helpers.
  • Across Lincoln, table hammocks proved popular for our youngest Scouters and Scouters in Training especially in the Otter and Gilbert households. Kev Wrenn also showed a superb hammock set up in his camp area this weekend to inspire the older sections.
  • It didn’t even matter if you couldn’t find a tent or fit it into your space, Helen and Sam enjoyed making their furry fort from cushions and blankets and had a cosy camp at home too.
  • In Holbeach, camping was just the start of the spring adventure. Connor, Kiah and Kacey have been very busy starting with a garden camp tea of hotdogs and pasta followed by popcorn and outdoor cinema, marshmallows on the bonfire, stargazing and watching the blood moon. During the days they have been on bike rides and a nature walk recording all the wildlife and insects they could find, made leaf prints and a butterfly house as well as watching a wildlife documentary learning about different animals in the wild.
I know there are more of you than I’ve been able to mention, hopefully I can share your adventures next time. If you can’t wait to camp again or want to be part of a world record attempt at the end of the month, you could join this event on 30th April in conjunction with Northumberland Scouts. (check locally for Nights Away award agreements).

If you are looking for a badge for blankets during this time both the #campathome Facebook events have merchandise being created and one stop scouting have a badge and range that may help you out. https://www.onestopscouting.co.uk/camp-home/camp-home-april-badge

I’d love to hear what else you’ve all been trying out while we’re not scouting face to face so please do let me know at cc@lincolnshirescouts.org.uk and I will share on the county website.

I hope you enjoyed the Easter weekend and for all your Scouting, whatever you are doing,  wherever you are … Bravo!
