Volunteer Development Update

Welcome to 2026.
You offer a great programme. Children are beating at your door wanting to join. You are limited by the size of your premises, or more likely by having insufficient leaders to cope with the numbers.
60% of all leaders and supporters come from your parent base. Have you thought of delegating the early evening tasks to greet your parents and take time to talk to them about how they can make a difference.
Do you have an information board that is regularly refreshed and includes vacancies and opportunities in a location that parents gather.
Do you have a link in your closed parent group that they contact you about helping out, and are your opportunities listed there.
Dare I suggest that recruitment should be an everyday thing that all your leaders, trustees, and supporters are involved in. This creates a larger scouting family supporting your group in even small ways that they might build on to become leaders. Adult volunteers like to join a successful team.
Did you know that when parents were asked about why they didn’t offer help to their group, 45% responded that they were never asked.
Just trying to help
Poacher 2026
Poacher still has vacancies for adult volunteers in a number of areas. If you fancy having a go and can spare some time the first week of August, search Poacher 2026 and click on staff vacancies. There is also the build and take down team happening the week preceding and following the Poacher week.
Contact me if you have any difficulty and I will put you in touch with the right person.
Learning Team
We are putting together a tam of adults who can help the county deliver learning to Leaders, Trustees and Supporters. This will involve some additional learning on your part but existing skills will be taken into account. Scouting skills, first aid skills, management skills, team building skills, Leadership skills – all can be used in this team.
Even if you have never taught before, these are skills that can be gained through your own learning.
My last appeal for volunteers resulted in no replies, hence optimistic that this new appeal might be different.
