SCOUTS GOLD AWARDS, Lincoln Cathedral, Chapter house, Monday 5th January 2015.
On a cold winter’s night stood at the west front of the Cathedral you might have thought people were getting ready for St Georges Day Parade rehearsal, as Scouts stood in uniform without coats they are so well trained, no one said” no coats” but they knew to be smart.
John Campbell from the Cathedral came out to greet the Scouts and parents, as with St Georges Day he opened the big west doors to let everyone in, mind the step, mind the step was said so many times and still someone missed the step (no injuries) just that embraced look and we all know that feeling.
Entering the Cathedral I was amazed there was no chairs set out it is then that you realise just how big a space there is.
John spoke to all the Scouts their parents and leaders, he said what a great achievement to get their gold awards and the hard work that goes into gaining the badge, he then introduced 2 of the Cathedral guides, everyone was split into 3 groups, we then went off in different direction for a short guided tour, I heard several people say I have been in here so many times but have learned so much about the building and its history, I would advise anyone to go on a guided tour of the Cathedral you may be amazed, this was my 3rd guided tour and I learnt something again, there was lots of humour in the talk which makes it even more interesting, if you see John ask him about Durham Cathedral.
Following the tour we were taken to the Chapter House for the presentation it was lovely and warm in there, our County Commissioner was introduced by Chris ADC scouts Robin the CC spoke of how they can now move on in their scouting and if they want to go for their Duke of Edinburgh awards and the Queen’s Scout award all of this would help them in the future, he said to gain your gold award was an amazing achievement they were a credit to Scouting and their parents.
It was lovely to see all these young people some have come all the way through from Beavers, I am sure they look back over the years in scouting and can tale many tales of fun, laughter and many achievements along the way, they all seem very confident young people which is what Scouting hopes our young people gain from all the different activities they take part in, allowing a young person to develop to their full potential is one of our main objectives, all these young people are truly a credit to themselves, their leaders and parents and I am sure the parents watching felt very proud of their children, we always say each top award for each section is the best they can do for that section on this occasion the best scouts on the day.
I hope in the future they will gain even higher awards and fingers crossed become leaders and use the knowledge and skills to help other young people achieve their full potential, and take their skills into adulthood in their chosen jobs.
Bravo to you all from everyone in Lincoln District
